It's been a couple of months since I did this, but here it is anyway. The mid-way project we did in collaboration with the CG artists. First time I've animated a feline creature, so it was a bit of a challenge for me.Lea Bøjehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12043327584650500410noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2147214317446094710.post-66079535191172651582013-02-08T05:30:00.004-08:002013-02-08T05:30:51.668-08:00Mid Year ExamOur mid year exam 2013 consisted of doing a short kung fu scene, preferably with less than 3 martial arts moves. We got a start and stop pose and were told to focus on physicality (and all the other important elements of animation of course), but other than that we had completely free reign. Looking up reference on Youtube was great fun and so was doing the assignment itself :) learned a lot this time around and got some quality critique from <a href="http://vimeo.com/davidtart" target="_blank">David Tart</a> which I will implement into the shot later on.<br />

We also spent approx. a day on doing a facial animation exercise.<br />
<br />
For Acting Pantomime we shot a lot of video reference of ourselves which helped immensely in nailing down poses and timing. We also used a new rig (this one is called Pat/Patricia). I chose to do a shot of a girl who curiously opens a box only to find something horrifying inside.<br />

<br />
<a href="http://kgoslowsky.blogspot.dk/" target="_blank">Katharina Goslowsky</a> and I are doing a tiny forest cat creature which we've named Caliope the forest guardian :) these are some of the early sketches and concepts I drew.<br />

<br />
<br />
The main project we've been working on this year is the <b>Trailer Project </b>which, like the Short, Short Film project we did on our second semester, is a collaboration between the CG artists and animators in our year. Basically we got assigned a classic movie and had to re-art direct it in a way that would fit the "spirit" of the film so you'd still recognize it when watching it, even if the visuals are completely different. Our group got to work with <i>The Shining </i>which was an intimidating but awesome feat.<br />
<br />
For the first two weeks of the semester both of the classes worked together in groups in order to come up with a narrative interpretation and visual designs for the trailer. Then the CGs took over and modelled the look of the film after which us animators spent the first two weeks of December animating the sequences. Finally the CGs took the trailers through comp and final polish during these last two weeks before our christmas break.<br />
<br />
These are the shots I animated. They aren't the most interesting shots, but I learned a lot from making them.<br />
<br />
<iframe allowfullscreen="allowfullscreen" frameborder="0" height="300" mozallowfullscreen="mozallowfullscreen" src="http://player.vimeo.com/video/55621853" webkitallowfullscreen="webkitallowfullscreen" width="400"></iframe>
<br />
It was great fun to work on and even if I'm not completely satisfied with my own effort I still think the final result looks awesome.<br />
<br />
A big thanks to my group which consisted of:<br />

We were free to choose the order of cycles to use, be it run to walk, walk to run, walk to stop etc. I chose walk to run and then stop. A fun little assignment.<br />
<br />

We are being taught by the talented <a href="http://sydneypadua.com/" target="_blank">Sydney Padua</a> and the rig we're using is her character, Daisy the cow.<br />
This is my first time animating an animal in 3D and I'm reasonably pleased with the result. Unfortunately I'm still missing animation on the tail and the udder, but I will update it soon!<br />
<br />
<iframe allowfullscreen="allowfullscreen" frameborder="0" height="300" mozallowfullscreen="mozallowfullscreen" src="http://player.vimeo.com/video/55019796" webkitallowfullscreen="webkitallowfullscreen" width="400"></iframe><br />
<br />
And here is Daisy doing a run. Still needs some touch-ups but it's getting there.<br />

Really tough to get done in time but worth the effort and with a nice focus on workflow and planning. This time around I did my thumbnails in TVPaint which was really rewarding as it was an insanely quick way of planning an entire scene and timing it out, using stick figures. And we had a new rig this time around as well, this one is called Norman and he is slightly more advanced than Hogan.<br />
<br />
My initial story was a guy who has been messing around with his rival's girlfriend. When the rival unexpectedly comes home through the front door, he is forced to take desperate measures to get out of dodge.<br />

<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
We started with a generic walk cycle (although mine might be a bit too on the loose side...) while focusing on breaking down the process into fragments; first the legs and hips, then the torso and head, lastly the arms, hands and refinements.<br />
<br /></div>
<iframe allowfullscreen="allowfullscreen" frameborder="0" height="300" mozallowfullscreen="mozallowfullscreen" src="http://player.vimeo.com/video/51061210" webkitallowfullscreen="webkitallowfullscreen" width="400"></iframe><br />
<br />
Next up is the character walk which we build upon our generic walk and then tweaked to get different results. I did a guy who really has to pee and has been holding it in for hours.<br />
<br />
<iframe allowfullscreen="allowfullscreen" frameborder="0" height="300" mozallowfullscreen="mozallowfullscreen" src="http://player.vimeo.com/video/51279934" webkitallowfullscreen="webkitallowfullscreen" width="400"></iframe><br />
<br />
Lastly we did a run cycle. It was supposed to be sort of generic, but mine ended up looking rather strained.<br />
<br />
<iframe allowfullscreen="allowfullscreen" frameborder="0" height="300" mozallowfullscreen="mozallowfullscreen" src="http://player.vimeo.com/video/52216723" webkitallowfullscreen="webkitallowfullscreen" width="400"></iframe>Lea Bøjehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12043327584650500410noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2147214317446094710.post-8534946518489611392012-09-25T11:34:00.000-07:002012-10-10T05:50:48.241-07:00First Hogan animationsWe've now begun doing small animation assignments with the Hogan rig from my previous entry. The first one was a standard turn/reaction.<br />
<br />
<iframe allowfullscreen="allowfullscreen" frameborder="0" height="300" mozallowfullscreen="mozallowfullscreen" src="http://player.vimeo.com/video/50143974" webkitallowfullscreen="webkitallowfullscreen" width="400"></iframe><br />
<br />
<span style="-webkit-text-size-adjust: auto; -webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; color: black; display: inline !important; float: none; letter-spacing: normal; orphans: 2; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; white-space: normal; widows: 2; word-spacing: 0px;">And next was a bow. Mine is a waiter who's dying to get off of work but has to stay and be polite to rich people a little longer.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="-webkit-text-size-adjust: auto; -webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; color: black; display: inline !important; float: none; letter-spacing: normal; orphans: 2; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; white-space: normal; widows: 2; word-spacing: 0px;"></span>
<iframe allowfullscreen="allowfullscreen" frameborder="0" height="300" mozallowfullscreen="mozallowfullscreen" src="http://player.vimeo.com/video/50354585" webkitallowfullscreen="webkitallowfullscreen" width="400"></iframe>
<br />
<br />
For the last small assignment we did a "Swing/Kick" or in other words a broad movement involving neutral stance, anticipation, action and settle.<br />
<br />
<iframe allowfullscreen="allowfullscreen" frameborder="0" height="300" mozallowfullscreen="mozallowfullscreen" src="http://player.vimeo.com/video/50629590" webkitallowfullscreen="webkitallowfullscreen" width="400"></iframe><br />
<br />
So that's the first brush with Hogan. We'll be spending the next weeks doing walk and run cycles.Lea Bøjehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12043327584650500410noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2147214317446094710.post-28283167926686836982012-09-24T00:16:00.000-07:002012-09-24T00:17:24.625-07:00Meet HoganFor our first humanoid rig we've got the character you see below, Hogan. Next up was Luxo Jr. We started out with an FK rig and did a short jump cycle.</div>
<div style="-webkit-text-size-adjust: auto; -webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; color: black; letter-spacing: normal; margin: 0px; orphans: 2; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; white-space: normal; widows: 2; word-spacing: 0px;">

<br />
And for the last Luxo assignment we used an IK rig and did a little hop, stop and take.<br />
<br />
<iframe allowfullscreen="allowfullscreen" frameborder="0" height="300" mozallowfullscreen="mozallowfullscreen" src="http://player.vimeo.com/video/49784912" webkitallowfullscreen="webkitallowfullscreen" width="400"></iframe><br />
<br />
We also did a very rushed little assignment that involved taking a piece of music and animating bouncing balls to the beat. I forgot to playblast mine until the last second so it is sadly way out of synch with the music.<br />

<br />
Our first year end exam consisted of animating Tillie the Hippo from Cats Don't Dance. The assignment came with a ready-made storyboard and rough key poses and we had to work from there. I generally enjoyed this exam a lot; Tillie is a pleasure to animate since she's so voluminous and bouncy.Lea Bøjehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12043327584650500410noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2147214317446094710.post-745791049062234492012-06-20T07:48:00.003-07:002012-06-20T07:49:36.986-07:00Intro to MayaOur last three days of school was a brief introduction to Autodesk Maya, which we will be using to animate next year, with <a href="http://magnusim.blogspot.dk/" target="_blank">Magnus Igland Møller</a>. This introduction mostly consisted of modelling and getting to know the program.<br />
<br />
Monday I did a very simple model of a bunny.<br />

The assignment was to create a hug between the Sultan from Aladdin and Hogarth from The Iron Giant.<br />

For our first assignment we did a medium shot of a puppet (with a character of our own choice) and had to animate it to a given sound-clip. I chose a sound-clip from the movie <i>The Quiet</i>. The character is random.<br />

The "Short, short film"-project lasted 4 weeks and was a collaboration between 1st year animators and CG artists. The intent was to create a 30-second film inspired by a few written prompts and two style guides. The first two weeks were spent on story- and art concepts, the last two on production of backgrounds, 2D animation and compositing.<br />
<br />
In our groups we were given the prompts: "smugness", "Whatever you do, don't eat it" and a style mash-up of the illustrators Tim Biskup and Heinz Edelmann.<br />

The characters included a little girl and a big furry monster eventually transformed into a cute little rabbit. It was really interesting going through the different stages of concept art. I tried finding shapes and characters in paint-splatter pages, collage and more conventional sketching and digital painting. Since we had to design for a young audience it was nice to experiment with simple shapes. In the end I came up with something akin to storybook illustrations. There's still lots of adjustment to consider but overall I'm pretty happy with the effort.</span></span><div style="text-align: center;font-family: Georgia, serif; font-size: 100%; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; line-height: normal; "><br /></div><div><div><span><span style="font-size: 100%; margin-right: auto; margin-left: auto;"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 320px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-AsscyF7Y9z8/T4hp5ZoqUWI/AAAAAAAAAOU/fH1W6m_AQwI/s320/Slide01.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5730946960683848034" /></span></span></div><span style="margin-right: auto; margin-left: auto;"><img src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-l5x1uVg4Gf0/T4hqRB8QnQI/AAAAAAAAAOg/kgprMeiFWgU/s320/Slide02.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5730947366640459010" style="font-family: 'Times New Roman'; font-size: medium; display: block; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-left: auto; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 320px; " /></span></div><div><img src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-fjciXTvotXA/T4hq6arpsNI/AAAAAAAAAOs/wcqFY0op8PU/s320/Slide03.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5730948077656322258" style="font-family: Georgia, serif; font-size: 16px; display: block; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-left: auto; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 320px; " /></div><div><div><img src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-M_92vbnMl_s/T4hrMYbRPtI/AAAAAAAAAO4/cX-qaJVD9dM/s320/Slide04.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5730948386288385746" style="display: block; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-left: auto; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 320px; " /><div></div><img src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-WwgDo7-Ju3E/T4hravRdW3I/AAAAAAAAAPE/CRB0BcfQces/s320/Slide05.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5730948632939420530" style="display: block; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-left: auto; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 320px; " /><img src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-vniJLZWHuHg/T4hrkehQOpI/AAAAAAAAAPQ/D2nRYFQfS5Q/s320/Slide06.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5730948800240958098" style="display: block; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-left: auto; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 320px; " /></div></div>Lea Bøjehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12043327584650500410noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2147214317446094710.post-85298747700055691842012-04-13T10:53:00.005-07:002012-04-13T10:57:55.483-07:00Character Design 2Second assignment of Character Design with Julia Bracegirdle was to go on a photo-session in Viborg and capture faces in objects (trees, vehicles, buildings etc) and to transform them into photo-collages.
